Radical humility for boards

To be effective, the members of corporate boards, advisory boards, and other committees need to recognise the limitations in their knowledge, question their assumptions, and be receptive to diverse perspectives—the hallmarks of humility.  If boards do not epitomise these qualities, members may disregard vital considerations.  Unfortunately, boards tend to underestimate the benefits of this humility as well as the challenges they need to overcome to foster this humility. Consequently, members may reach uninformed or misguided decisions, often manifesting as

  • unfulfilled opportunities, diminishing revenue and market share,
  • unsound investments and unnecessary costs,
  • scandals or other events that decimate reputation,
  • decisions that harm the satisfaction and wellbeing of customers,
  • breaches of laws and regulations,
  • a sharp decline in the confidence of investors, shareholders, and other key stakeholders.
